Medical

Medical- What the state guidelines say:
The program provider must protect and promote the rights of the individual to choose from the same services that are available to all community members.

Medical- What other parents recommend you look for:

  • Knowledgeable physicians with disability experience
  • An accessible nurse on staff
  • Access to specialty clinics if necessary

Medical- My thoughts:
If changing HCS providers, it is always important to make sure that old medical providers communicate with and provide an adequate medical history for the new medical providers.  If you have the ability to speak with the staffed nurse of the HCS provider, spend a few minutes talking with her about her experience with individuals with disabilities.  Also, ask the HCS provider about their use of specialty clinics in the area (for Autism, Down Syndrome, MS, CP etc.).
